Why do my eyes hurt after hours on the laptop or phone, and how do I fix it?

Eye pain, heaviness, headache and blur after long screen hours is usually computer vision syndrome (also called digital eye strain). It happens because your eyes focus hard at one distance and blink less. The best fixes are the 20-20-20 habit, correct glasses power, better screen setup and enough sleep. If strain continues despite these, get a full eye test, because a small uncorrected power is a very common hidden cause.
What is computer vision syndrome?
It is a group of symptoms caused by long, close, screen-based work: tired or burning eyes, headache around the forehead, blurred or double vision, dry or watery eyes, and neck or shoulder pain. Students, coders, bank staff, designers, gamers and anyone scrolling for hours in Lucknow can get it.
Why it happens
- Your focusing muscle stays tight for hours when looking at a screen
- Blink rate drops, so the tear film dries
- Glare, bright screens in dark rooms and reflections make the eye work harder
- Poor posture, with the screen too high, too low or too close
- An uncorrected or old spectacle power makes every task harder
The 20-20-20 habit
Every 20 minutes, look at something about 20 feet (6 metres) away for at least 20 seconds. Set a phone reminder at first. Stand up, walk to the window and look outside. It relaxes the focusing muscle and lets you blink fully.
Set up your screen well
- Keep the monitor about an arm's length away, with the top of the screen at or just below eye level
- Reduce glare: avoid a window or bright bulb right behind or in front of the screen
- Match screen brightness to the room and use larger text instead of leaning in
- Use night mode in the evening if it feels more comfortable
- Keep phones at least 30–40 cm away and avoid long scrolling in the dark
Do blue-cut glasses help?
Blue-cut lenses reduce some of the blue-violet light from screens and cut glare, and many people feel more comfortable with them during long hours. But research has not shown that blue light from screens damages the eye, and blue-cut lenses are not a substitute for breaks and the right power. Think of them as a comfort add-on to correct glasses.
Signs your power may be the real cause
- Strain even when you take regular breaks
- Headaches mostly in the afternoon or evening
- Squinting at the board, the screen or the phone
- Your last eye test was more than 1–2 years ago
- You are over 40 and holding things further away to read
When to get an eye test
Get your eyes tested if symptoms last more than a couple of weeks, if one eye hurts more than the other, or if you see double. Children with long online classes should also be checked.
Frequently asked questions
Can screens damage my eyes permanently?
Screen use causes temporary strain and dryness, not known permanent damage. But strain can be mistaken for a power problem, so get tested.
How long can I safely use a screen?
There is no fixed limit. Take a short break every 20 minutes and a longer one every hour.
Do anti-glare coatings help?
Yes, they reduce reflections from lights and screens and make night driving and screen use more comfortable.
Which lens is best for office work?
Single-vision lenses with an anti-glare coating are usually enough under 40. After 40, many people do better with progressive or occupational lenses.
Do eye drops help?
Preservative-free lubricating drops can help if dryness is the issue, but they do not fix focusing strain.

Related questions
Do I really need blue-cut lenses?
Not necessarily. Blue-cut lenses filter part of the blue light from screens and some people find them more comfortable. However, research has not shown that screen blue light damages the eyes or that blue-cut lenses alone prevent eye strain. Correct power, a good anti-glare coating, screen breaks and blinking matter most. At ORINvue we explain the options honestly so you can choose.
Can I get my eyes tested if I have a red or painful eye?
It is better to see an eye doctor first. A red, painful or sticky eye may be an infection or inflammation that needs treatment, and power measured during an eye problem may not be accurate. Once your eye has healed, you can have a spectacle eye test. At ORINvue, our optometrist Khushboo Gangwar will guide you to a trusted eye specialist first, and test your eyes for glasses once they have healed.
What is the 20-20-20 rule?
Every 20 minutes of screen or near work, look at something about 20 feet (6 metres) away for at least 20 seconds. It relaxes the focusing muscles and reminds you to blink, reducing eye strain and dryness. It is simple advice that suits students, office workers and gamers alike.
Is −0.25 or −0.50 power worth wearing glasses for?
It depends on your needs. Very low power may not need glasses all the time, but some people notice clearer vision for driving, the classroom board or night-time with even a small correction. Small astigmatism can also cause strain on screens. Your optometrist will advise whether glasses will help you.
What is an anti-glare (anti-reflection) coating?
Anti-glare, also called anti-reflection or HMC coating, reduces reflections on the lens surface. It makes lenses look clearer, reduces glare from headlights and screens, and lets more light reach your eyes. It is one of the most useful coatings for almost everyone, especially for night driving and computer use.
